Background of the study:
Mixed-ethnic marriages in Akure North Local Government Area have become more prevalent as communities become increasingly diverse. These unions are catalysts for cultural exchange and evolution, merging distinct traditions, values, and practices (Oluwaseun, 2023). While they offer opportunities for enriched cultural understanding and social cohesion, they also present challenges regarding cultural preservation and identity negotiation (Adeyemi, 2024). In these marriages, conflicting cultural norms may lead to identity ambiguities and intergenerational tensions. The study explores how mixed-ethnic marriages influence cultural practices, challenge established norms, and create opportunities for reimagining traditions (Fadeyi, 2025). It further examines the ways in which couples navigate and negotiate cultural differences in family settings, thereby redefining notions of ethnicity, tradition, and social integration. The findings are expected to offer insights into how mixed-ethnic unions contribute to or detract from cultural continuity and social harmony, providing valuable implications for social policy and community planning (Olu, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
Mixed-ethnic marriages in Akure North have led to both opportunities and conflicts in cultural integration. The blending of different traditions sometimes results in the erosion of distinct cultural identities and creates challenges in maintaining coherent cultural practices within families. There is insufficient research on the cultural implications of these unions, necessitating an investigation into their impact on social norms and family dynamics (Ayodele, 2023).
